SUMMARY:Transforming Science and Engineering Research through an Innovativ
e High Performance AI+HPC Ecosystem at PSC
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nPaola Buitrago (Pittsburgh Supercomputing Cen
ter)\n\nAI is transforming research through analysis of voluminous dataset
s and accelerating simulations by factors of up to a billion. Such acceler
ation far exceeds the speedups possible through improvements in CPU proces
s and other kinds of algorithmic advances. To continue exploring the possi
bilities enabled, the research community requires an ecosystem that seamle
ssly and efficiently brings together scalable AI, HPC and large-scale dat
a management. The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) offers an innovat
ive computational ecosystem to enable AI-enabled research, bringing togeth
er carefully designed systems and groundbreaking technologies to provide,
at no cost, a uniquely capable ecosystem composed of two major systems: Ne
ocortex and Bridges-2. Neocortex embodies a revolutionary processor archit
ecture to vastly shorten the time required for deep learning training, fos
ter greater integration of artificial deep learning with scientific workfl
ows, and accelerate graph analytics. Bridges-2 integrates additional scala
ble AI, HPC and high-performance parallel file systems for simulation, vis
ualization and Big Data as a Service. Neocortex and Bridges-2 are integrat
ed to form a tightly coupled and flexible ecosystem for AI- and data-drive
n research. We will cover a detailed description of the AI+HPC ecosystem a
t PSC and highlight a set of representative scientific research projects t
hat are leveraging this advanced cyberinfrastructure\n\nDomain: Climate, W
eather, and Earth Sciences, Applied Social Sciences and Humanities, Comput
ational Methods and Applied Mathematics\n\nSession Chair: Marie-Christine
