SUMMARY:Discussion Panel: Future Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nChristian Lessig (ECMWF, Otto-von-Guericke-Un
iversitat Magdeburg) and Ilaria Luise (CERN)\n\nThe last part of the works
hop will be an interactive discussion on the following open questions: “Wh
ere foundation models could be useful in Earth system science?”, “What wou
ld be the advantages and limitations of foundation models in Earth system
science?” and “Can we start building an agenda?”. Given the diverse audien
ce of the event, we foreseen this part as a brainstorming occasion also ac
ross different scientific communities. For this reason, the discussion wil
l focus on more general questions like “To which extent can we trust and u
tilize a foundation model for scientific predictions?” and “Will these mod
els be able to replace the current numerical approaches?”. For this intera
ctive Q&A part the speakers will be invited as panelists, together with ex
perts like Karthik Kashinath from NVIDIA and Sebastian Schemm from ETH Zur
ich to ensure a broader overview of the ongoing efforts in the field.\n\nD
omain: Climate, Weather, and Earth Sciences, Computational Methods and App
lied Mathematics\n\nSession Chair: Christian Lessig (ECMWF, Otto-von-Gueri
 cke-Universitat Magdeburg)
