SUMMARY:Global Storm Resolving Simulations in a Python Framework: An (earl
 y) Perspective from EXCLAIM
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nAnurag Dipankar (ETH Zurich) and Mauro Bianco
(ETH Zurich / CSCS)\n\nWithin EXCLAIM (EXtreme scale Computing and data p
latform for cLoud-resolving weAther and clImate Modeling), we are develop
ing a performance-portable weather and climate model that resides within a
Python framework. The model is based on the German global non-hydrostatic
modeling system ICON. \nSignificant progress has been made in the last tw
o years. Model components (i.e., dynamical core, tracer advection, and clo
ud microphysics) responsible for the model physics have been rewritten usi
ng an embedded DSL called GT4Py. The Python driver code that combines the
se physical components with the model infrastructure for a successful simu
lation is demonstrated to perform satisfactorily for a standard dynamical
core test. Work is ongoing to expand the Python framework by including oth
er model components. While there were several challenges along the way, th
e challenge that remains open is the missing connection with the conventio
nal model developers which, by and large, is acting as an observer.\n\nDom
ain: Climate, Weather, and Earth Sciences\n\nSession Chairs: Claudia Fraue
n (DKRZ) and Balthasar Reuter (ECMWF)
