SUMMARY:P06 - Atlas as a Unified Data Structure Interface for Computation
 on Heterogeneous Architectures
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nSlavko Brdar, Willem Deconinck, and Michael Lange (E
CMWF)\n\nAt ECMWF, the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) is undergoing a
n incremental code refactoring aimed at running the forecast on heterogene
ous computing architectures. One strategy is using the open-source and in-
house developed Atlas library, which provides data structures, memory mana
gement and parallelisation techniques, as well as some data manipulation t
echniques such as interpolation and model component coupling. Crucial part
s of the IFS have been extracted as dwarf-codes and have been extensively
optimised and ported to non-CPU hardware using the Fortran FIELD API. Buil
t on this experience, this poster presents how new Atlas data structures a
nd memory management techniques are implemented and employed, in order to
provide a more generic approach that could be merged into or replace FIELD
API eventually. The comparisons of Atlas vs. original Fortran data struct
ures are carried out on “dwarf-cloudsc”, a representative IFS physics para
metrisation dwarf.\n\nSession Chair: Erik W. Draeger (Lawrence Livermore N
 ational Laboratory)
