SUMMARY:MS3B - Open-Source Scientific Software Ecosystem Stewardship: Path
 ways to Foundations
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nBroad communities across government, non-prof
its, industry, and academia are involved in the use and development of sci
entific software to readily integrate the latest approaches in computing s
uch as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The open-so
urce foundation model has proved highly successful in the sustainment of r
esearch software. For example, the two-decade-old Linux Foundation support
s over 200 communities and 3,400 project source code repositories, includi
ng the recently announced High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF). Add
itionally, NumFOCUS, Inc. established in 2012 and focusing on essential re
search software projects, has 45 sponsored and 51 affiliated projects. In
this minisymposium, we explore strategies of stewardship pathways to found
ations fostering innovation and providing common services and infrastructu
re that benefit all communities. Our speakers will address the following q
uestions: Why would one want to join an open-source software foundation? W
hat are potential pathways to joining a foundation? What challenges and op
portunities may be encountered? The talks in this session will address les
sons learned and facilitate a thought-provoking discussion aimed at enabli
ng informed decision making when choosing pathways to open-source software
advancement.\n\nPETSc Pathway to NumFOCUS\n\nNumFOCUS's mission is "to pr
omote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing by servin
g as a fiscal sponsor for open source projects and organizing community-dr
iven educational programs." The emphasis is on projects that can lead to t
he advancement of scientific research. It began in...\n\n\nStefano Zampini

re\n\nKitware is a 25-years old company, leader in developing open source
software for science and artificial intelligence, like CMake, VTK or ParaV
iew. This talk will explore the challenges of maintaining these open sourc
e tools for a long time period, via an analysis of Kitware’s current and f

-------\nSpack's Road to the High Performance Software Foundation\n\nSpack
is a founding project in the High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF),
a nascent Linux Foundation project umbrella that aims to support open sou
rce projects as part of a portable, accelerated software stack for high pe
rformance computing. The Spack team has contemplated joining a foundation.

----------\nPanel Discussion\n\nThe minisymposium will conclude with a pan
el discussion moderated by the minisymposium organizer and featuring the i
nvited speakers. The panel will be moderated as a conversation addressing
audience questions about pathways to foundations including potential chall
enges, benefits, and next steps.\n\n\nElaine M. Raybourn (Sandia National
Laboratories)\n\nDomain: Engineering, Computational Methods and Applied Ma
thematics\n\nSession Chair: Elaine M. Raybourn (Sandia National Laboratori
